Mounting wedges: which wedge for which application?

From the small red all-rounder to the heavy-duty large format: how to find the right plastic wedge for aligning, wedging and fixing.

GV plastic wedges in various sizes and colours

What are mounting wedges used for?

Mounting wedges align components and hold them in position until they are permanently fixed: window frames and door frames, furniture and kitchens, stairs, thresholds or substructures. Plastic wedges are superior to wooden wedges in many respects. They do not swell, rot or splinter, and keep their shape even with moisture and temperature changes.

The red wedge 64 × 28 × 9 mm is our best-selling wedge, an all-rounder for interior fit-out and window construction. The 87 × 43 × 15 mm and 135 × 43 × 24 mm formats are designed for greater heights and heavier components. The brown furniture wedge 99 × 20 × 8 mm is narrow and unobtrusive, e.g. for furniture and kitchen making.

Which wedge for which task?

  • Small gaps and fine alignment: 64 × 28 × 9 mm (red), 70 × 35 × 11 mm (yellow) or 76 × 38 × 10 mm (white).
  • Larger gaps, heavier components: 87 × 43 × 15 mm (grey) and 135 × 43 × 24 mm (black). The green wedge 135 × 43 × 24 mm can bear loads of up to 2 t.
  • Screw fixing: The versions “with hole” can also be screwed in place, so they can no longer slip out.
  • Furniture and kitchens: the narrow furniture wedge 99 × 20 × 8 mm (brown).

Tip: two wedges form a parallel support

A single wedge provides an inclined surface. Pushing two identical wedges against each other creates a horizontal, parallel support whose height can be adjusted continuously. This is also how the fine adjustment of the GV adjustable foot works: two grey or black wedges adjust the height in increments of 0.3 mm.

Wedges in window construction: an aid, not a permanent solution

In window installation, wedges are used to align and temporarily fix the frame. According to the RAL installation guideline (Leitfaden zur Montage), the loads of the window are permanently transferred into the building structure via setting blocks. Find out more in the guide Window installation: positioning setting and location blocks correctly.

Assortments for vehicle and site

The common wedge formats are also available mixed in a resealable bag: MINI 61, MID 120 and MIX 240. That way, you always have the right size in the installation vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, wooden wedges or plastic wedges?

Plastic wedges do not swell, rot or splinter, and they keep their shape even when exposed to moisture. This makes them particularly suitable when the wedge remains in the component or is to be reused.

How do I get a horizontal support with wedges?

Push two identical wedges against each other. This creates a parallel support whose height can be adjusted continuously by sliding them.

Can wedges remain in the window?

In window installation, wedges are an aid for alignment. Permanent load transfer is via setting blocks; the window manufacturer’s specifications and the RAL installation guideline (Leitfaden zur Montage) are authoritative.

Which GV wedge is the most popular?

The red wedge 64 × 28 × 9 mm. It is our best-selling wedge and a versatile all-rounder.

These notes are general guidance from practice. The applicable regulations, the specifications of the window or system manufacturers and the project-specific planning are authoritative.
